The Beginning...

The first meeting of the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company was held at the Town Hall, January 21, 1931. There were 61 men in attendance and W.A. Berger served as chairman. Since the town had a water system, these men felt the need for a volunteer fire company. They were determined, good-thinking, citizens and within a month, they had 71 to sign the Charter and elect a Fire Chief and other officers. With the help of the Town Council, they purchased 1000 feet of hose and a hose reel.

Edward Mershon served as the first President; Aaron Bachman served as the first Fire Chief and continued to do so for nearly 27 consecutive years.

In 1934, the first fire truck was purchased. In 1949, the first ambulance was purchased. The organization has continued to grow in membership, leadership, and equipment since its beginnings in 1931.

After Fifty Years...

At the Golden Anniversary in 1981, the organization had 18 remaining Charter members, 590 Active members, 775 Social members, and a fleet of fire and rescue equipment consisting of five fire trucks, two ambulances, and a group of dedicated personnel that responded to 179 fire calls and 866 medical calls.

After Seventy Years....

In this 70th year of the Saxonburg Vounteer Fire Company, we celebrate four of our remaining Charter Members, Victor Franke, Francis Herold, Kenneth Neupert, and Carl Schoentag.

Today our ranks include 305 Active members, 499 Social members, and 3 Junior members. Our fleet has grown to 6 fire trucks, 1 utility vehicle, 3 ambulances, and state of the art fire, rescue, and medical equipment. In 2000, the organization responded to 354 fire calls, handled 2152 ambulance calls, and provide more than 8,200 person-hours of emergency service to our community!

We thank our membership and those who have supported the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company. We celebrate this longevity and hope to continue our service for many more years.
